Blake Griffin, the newest Net, will not play Saturday against the Pistons, the team that bought out the remainder of his contract over the All-Star break.
The six-time All-Star power forward, who officially signed with the Nets on Tuesday, also sat out Thursday’s win over the Celtics. He hasn’t appeared in a game since Feb. 12 while Detroit attempted to trade him.
“Blake is out [Saturday], but we’re basically just kind of right now considering a ramp-up plan for him,” Nets coach Steve Nash said after practice Friday. “He’s had kind of a longer layoff, so how can we get him up to speed and figure out when we can safely integrate him into the group at full speed?
“In the coming days, we should have more information of what that plan is. But right now, our goal is still going through the assessment stage and figuring out what direction to take.”
Forward Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot is listed as doubtful after missing the past three games bridging the All-Star break with the knee injury he suffered on Feb. 27.
“I’m not concerned. I think he’ll be back relatively soon,” Nash said. “I don’t want to say too much because I’m not certain when he’s coming back. But I’m not overly concerned. I think you’ll see him again soon.”
Kevin Durant also will miss an 11th consecutive game with a strained left hamstring.
Bruce Brown is unsure how much his role will change once Griffin, his former Detroit teammate, joins the rotation. Brown is averaging 16.0 points and 28.4 minutes per game — often at power forward — over his last seven appearances. Nash referred Friday to the 6-foot-4 Brown as “kind of our Swiss Army knife.”
“Maybe I’ll have some guards guarding me, but I think I will still do the same thing depending on who’s on the floor with me,” Brown said. “I don’t think anything will change. They brought me here for defense, so that’s my main role.”
